Ogun State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development has expressed plans to constitute a monitoring team towards checkmating the sales of substandard blocks as part of its efforts at curtailing incidences of building collapse.

Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Tpl Olatunji Odunlami, made this known in Abeokuta, during a courtesy visit by the Ogun State Chapter of Block Moulders Association of Nigeria, saying substandard blocks produced largely by unregulated block moulders was one of the challenges facing the built industry.

“The Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, through Ogun State Building Production Management Authority, is committed to ensuring that buildings are built better, stronger, to stand the test of time and prevent collapse,” the Commissioner stated.

Emphasising the importance of quality blocks to safety and longevity of buildings, Odunlami further stated that the Ministry and its agencies were open to collaboration with critical stakeholders in the built industry, hinting that the domestication of the National Building Code in Ogun State was being finalised to serve as an additional quality control and regulatory instrument.

Remarking, the state Chairman of the Association, Chief Abiodun Ajayi, who decried the tendency to condemn block makers whenever a building collapsed, appreciated the present administration towards bringing sanity into the sector, calling for government’s support in weeding out erring block makers, who refused to follow the stipulated standards, towards ensuring safety of the people.
