The Lagos State Government has appealed to residents, businesses and organisations to minimise noise levels during and after the yuletide to ensure public health and well-being.
The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr Tokunbo Wahab, alongside General Manager of the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), Dr Tunde Ajayi, made the appeal at a news conference in Monday in Ikeja.
According to Wahab, a dedicated task force will be formed to monitor and enforce noise regulations.
He emphasised a strict “no tolerance” policy towards noise pollution throughout the state warning that violators would be arrested and prosecution.
He said, “Yuletide is characterised by numerous celebrations and noisy activities.
“However, we must prioritise the well-being of our people and the environment by regulating noise levels to avoid long-term health and environmental consequences.”
Announcing measures to enforce the noise policy, the commissioner said that a dedicated task force would be formed to monitor and enforce noise regulations.
He said that the law enforcement agencies would increase patrols and monitoring efforts.
Wahab said that Worship centers, nightclubs, and other venues hosting public events would require permits from LASEPA, encouraging the establishments to operate within soundproofed environments.
The commissioner stated that the government qould intensify public awareness campaigns to educate citizens about the dangers of noise pollution.
Additionally, Wahab said that the government would collaborate with religious organisations, businesses, and other stakeholders to ensure compliance.
He said, “this initiative aims to create a peaceful, quieter, safer, and healthier Lagos during and beyond the festive period.”
The Commissioner also reaffirmed the government’s dedication to implementing environmental reforms in line with its T.H.E.M.E.S+ development agenda.
