Ogun State Government in collaboration with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has taken a significant step towards improving maternal and child health, by organising a training for health workers on maternal and child feeding in the State.

Commissioner for Health, Dr. Tomi Coker, during the training programme organised in Abeokuta, said the training was aimed towards equipping health workers with requisite skills and knowledge needed to provide quality maternal and child healthcare services, particularly in the areas of nutrition and diet. She said that the initiative was part of a broader effort of the Prince Dapo Abiodun’s led administration to reduce maternal and child mortality rates in the State.

Dr. Coker said nutrition was one of the basic determinants of good health which requires universal coverage, adding that relevant stakeholders and caregivers should be exposed to global best practices in that regard. Hence, investing in the training and development of health workers would demonstrate their commitment to improving the health and wellbeing of mothers and children.

Speaking earlier, Executive Secretary, Primary Health Care Development Board in the state, Dr. Elijah Ogunsola stated that the initiative marks a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to combat malnutrition, underweight, severe acute malnutrition, as well as obesity, aimed at improving the health outcomes of mothers, infants, and children.

He pointed out that, Malnutrition remains a persistent challenge, affecting the health and development of children and the well-being of mothers, noting that participants had a task ahead of re-training others in their respective health facilities.

In her remark, Nutrition Programme Coordinator at JICA, Princess Barry-Chukwu, commended the state government for its collaborative efforts while advocating for more synergy between the health care workers and women.
