Women’s Rights and Health Project (WRAHP) in partnership with Theresa Williams Foundation (TWF) has taken domestic violence campaign to Itedo community, Lekki, in Lagos State.

Speaking at the campaign, the Executive Director of WRAHP, Mrs Bose Ironsi, said that the event was part of WRAHP’s continued efforts to address the challenges posed by domestic violence and to empower survivors with critical resources and knowledge to improve their safety and well-being.

Ironsi said domestic violence remained a persistent issue that affected countless lives, often hidden behind a veil of silence and societal stigma.

“This campaign aims to raise awareness about the pressing need to combat domestic violence, educate the community on protective legal frameworks such as the Domestic Violence Law and Child Rights Law, and provide practical solutions to foster safer homes and neighbourhoods.

“The event will include interactive sessions where experts will share insights on the dynamics of domestic violence and the pathways available to access justice.

“Participants will gain valuable information about safety planning and the resources available to survivors, including shelters and legal support.

“Through engaging discussions with community members and stakeholders, we will explore ways to build a supportive network to prevent abuse and assist survivors” she said.

Ironsi said that the initiative underscored WRAHP’s belief in the power of communities to drive positive change by bringing together diverse voices, including local leaders, artisans, traders, and religious leaders,

She said that the NGO hoped to create a united front against domestic violence and foster a culture of accountability and support reflecting their shared vision of creating a society where everyone feels safe, respected, and empowered.

A participant, Mrs Taiwo Ogunyemi, said that the campaign was insightful.

Ogunyemi appealed to the NGO to include more leaders from the market and religious places in the community.

Another participant, Olanrewaju Akinnirunoye, said that the campaign was an eye opener to so many people in the community.

Akinnirunoye said that issues of domestic violence abounds in the community and the people don’t know their rights or places to report such incidents to.

He said that more of these campaigns would go a long way to reduce domestic violence in the community.
