Man risks 2-year imprisonment for wearing police uniform

A 42-year-old man, Orus Seyefa, was on Tuesday arraigned at a Yaba Chief  Magistrates’ court in Lagos for allegedly wearing a police uniform with the rank of an inspector.

Seyefa, who resides in Apapa area of Lagos, is facing a one count charge of unlawfully wearing a uniform of the police.

He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Police prosecutor, ASP Rita Momah, told the court that the defendant allegedly committed the offence sometime in April, at Orile bus stop, Lagos.

She said that the defendant was arrested while wearing the Nigeria Police Force uniform with the rank of an inspector.

According to her, the defendant was always sitting at a corner, drinking with his friends and playing games, while wearing the uniform.

The offence contravened Section 79 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

Section 79 provides for two-year imprisonment for unlawful wearing of police or armed forces uniform.

Chief Magistrate Mrs Adeola Adedayo, admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N100,000, with two sureties in like sum.

She said that the sureties must submit copies of their National Identification Number (NIN) and their Lagos State Residents Registration Agency (LASRRA) card.

She directed that both of them must be resident within the court’s jurisdiction and be gainfully employed with evidence of three years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

Adedayo adjourned the case until July 12 for mention.
