The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Command in Ogun State says 194 persons died while 1,245 others sustained injuries in road accidents between January and June in the state.
Mr Ahmed Umar, the State Sector Commander , disclosed this during a retreat, held at the command’s headquarters on Tuesday in Abeokuta.
Umar explained that 614 road accidents were recorded during the period under review as against 405 recorded within same period in 2020.
He said that most of the accidents occurred on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway.Umar attributed the causes of the accidents to bad roads, wrongful overtaking, non use of seat belts, bad tyres and excessive speeding.
He urged motorists to drive cautiously and always maintain the required speed limit while plying highways, saying that, the corp will continue its safety sensitisation programmes.
Umar said that the command was working with Lagos and Oyo State Governments to organise a ‘Special Intervention Patrol’ to ensure routine patrol on the corridors of the two states.
On his parts, the Executive Secretary, Ogun State Security Trust Fund, Mr Opeyemi Agbaje, noted that the state government and the fund had been supporting the corp through the provision of patrol vehicles.
Agbaje added that the fund was determined to sponsor jingle on radio stations to create more awareness on the 112 emergency number issued by the corp for emergency calls.
