Ahead of the 2023 general election, a former federal lawmaker in Ogun State, Hon. Oladipupo Adebutu has called on members of People’s Democratic Party in the state to shun their differences and work for the progress and unity of the party.
Adebutu maintained that, only when the members were united that the party could hijack power from the ruling party in the state, saying a divided house would not steer the wheel of progress.
The PDP stalwart made this known on Tuesday, during the party’s unification meeting held at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL), Abeokuta, Ogun State capital.
He also apologised to party members for failure to have a smooth campaign and oneness family in the state, urging everyone to be united for the purpose of the party and for the development of the country.
“We need to get united for several reasons, the first and foremost reason is that to have a country, Nigeria, we must have viable democracy, without democracy we cannot have a successful country and in the process of having democracy, as it is today, we are in the opposition party and we must be responsible and be available, we have a duty to this nation, if we don’t have a nation, how many of us are prepared to be refugees today?.
“We have been misgoverned, malgoverned for the last few years, to return Nigeria to sanity, our well being, it is our duty as a people to maintain the building block to the opposition nationally, we owe it a duty to provide good governance
“We are in an endowed State, good luck, good fortune, nothing comes through Nigeria except they comes through us, that lucky position we have failed to exploit, despite that infact that in Ogun State we have had good fortune of good governance, over ten years, we have the likes of Awolowo, Onabanjo, we have had good governance, but some how, somewhere along the line, we have made certain mistructures, we need to succeed as a people, we need to have good governance and we need as a people, as a party to win in Ogun State for this reason of provision of good governance, we must act united” he said.
The former lawmaker equally urged anyone interested in contesting the governorship election on the platform of the party to challenge him.
He said, the process will be good for the party and will equally create room for constructive and healthy competition in the party.
According to him, “I have said and I am repeating it, and let it be clear I have done a lot of work, I have ambition, but I expect anybody else so that we shall have the best, anybody desirous of any position, desirous of you being the Governor as candidate in Ogun State.
“I appeal with you, please step forward and compete with me, let more people come out and compete, it is good for the party, when more people compete, we shall have constructive competition, of course, the party should be lubricated, when I give you Chicken, he will give you Rice, another person will give you Pepper.
“Let people compete, let people have the courage to compete, what we done in the past and what has attracted many to what we are doing today is that we are free and candid with people”.
The Remo-born politician, also welcome those who returned back to the party, saying “I welcome all those who returned to the fold, I can assure you, have no fear, the system will be free, fear and equitable”.
Also speaking, the former Presidential candidate of the party, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, who spoke through a five-minutes video recording urged members to be steadfast for a better tomorrow through the unifying efforts of the party in the State.
He said, “The key issue I brought to you is to acknowledge the unifying effort of the party in Ogun State, and we can confirm that the party is indeed in the unification effort of bringing together all manners of those home and away under one umbrella
The Party’s National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus, in his speech commended the efforts of the State party towards unifying the members of the party.
He said, “we were divided and you know that divided we cannot stand, but united we can stand, so we are very pleased with your actions today, that all our members who had left to other political parties had now agreed to come together and form that united party that can withstand all various and that can move forward and win election anytime they would come”
The Party’s helsman, also added, “For how long can we be oppressed, for how long can we be intimated, for how long can we starved, for how long can we continue to kill ourselves? There is so much hunger on the land, so much killings on the land, we have never witnessed such before, even when Nigeria passed through the civil war, the number of people that have been killed since the inception of this APC government is so much that you can’t place records.
“Everyday you woke up to hear the killings in Zamfara, the killings in Enugu, the killings across the country, Benue, Taraba, Ogun State, other states, there is no State in Nigeria today that there has no been record of killings, and suicide, all because of bad governance.
“We must rise and united ourselves because we are all democrats, the entire world is watching the population of 200 million people, Nigeria people are also watching, we had elections in February and March and you all know how it went, we all see the results, though we are not allowed to talk about it, but the people are watching”.
However, the Ogun PDP Chairman, Sikirullahi Ogundele, in his short admonition, said that the party is ready to get back government from the present administration.
“We have decided to work together to getting back governance, we have decided to get government back from “Criminals”, we are together for the future of PDP forj victory” He said.
Among dignitaries present at the unification meeting were; the Party’s National Vice Chairman (Southwest), Dr. Eddy Olafeso, National Publicity Secretary, Olawale Ologbondiyan, National Youth leader, Hon. Okoye Eke, and others.
