Bayo Dayo-led Executive Committee (EXCO) of the Ogun chapter of the People Democratic Party (PDP) said on Wednesday that it would embrace all aggrieved members of the party inspite of the Tuesday’s court ruling given in its favour.
Dayo stated this in an interview with the news Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abeokuta, the state capital.
A Federal High Court sitting in Abeokuta on Tuesday recognised the group as the authentic executive committee and ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the national body of party to accept candidates only from the group for the 2019 polls.
The Senator Ahmed Markafi- led National Caretaker Committee of the PDP had in August, 2017 dissolved the Ogun PDP Executive Committee and later in the same month inaugurated a caretaker committee to oversee the affairs of the party in the state.
Markafi later conducted a state congress in Ogun where a 31- member executive committee emerged as leaders of the party under the chairmanship of Mr Sikirulai Ogundele.
The Bayo Dayo -led group which had since described the new executive illegal
had approached the court on September 25 and prayed it to direct the INEC to recognise it as the authentic leadership and also accept list of candidates from the primaries conducted by it for the 2019 polls.
It also requested the court to restrain the National body of PDP from organising a national convention without delegates from the group.
The Executive Committee had argued that it remained constitutionally valid and judicially sacrosanct till May, 2020 based on an earler judgement of Justice Ibrahim Buba of the Federal High Court, Abuja, in suit no FH/L/CS/636/2016 between the group and PDP national in which INEC was joined.
The two factions had on Saturday held parallel governorship primaries in Abeokuta where two candidates emerged separately as the party’s flagbearers for the 2019 governorship polls.
At the ruling on Tuesday, Justice Abubakar Shittu granted the prayers and gave an interlocutory order directing both the INEC to recognise candidates from the plaintiff for the 2019 polls.
Shittu who adjourned sitting till November 7, for hearing of the main case also gave an interlocutory order restraining the national body of PDP from organising a national convention without delegates from the group.
Dayo , in an interview with NAN however, said his committee would accommodate the other group and work together to ensure victory for the party in the 2019 polls.
“Winning in the court is not winning the hearts of the people.
” The hearts of the people can only be won collectively when we work together.
“We have learnt our lessons from the Ekiti and Osun polls and we cannot afford to ho into the 2019 polls divided,” he said. (NAN)
